i am consistently amazed by how well the people that sell late night advertising space know their audience.

Indeed. Adult Swim on Cartoon Network, however, has got it all wrong. Yes, it's a cartoon network..but the programming after 11 is meant for 17-years and up! And they advertise the same things they advertise all day..barbie, and crap like that. : P
Dunno about you, but there's often been times late at night where I've thought "My pee pee is broken... Oh! Genius idea! I'll have to patent it though". Then I'd start thinking along the lines of leaving the house to go and patent it which would lead to social anxiety, so in order to alleviate the anxiety I'd call sex/dating lines. Of course, to fully understand patenting, I'd need a Law degree....
