the things i ponder when incredibly sleep deprived:

i had a conversation with shawn (later continuing it with kirtan for a while) this morning that was quite odd.

you know, as you approach the speed of light, time slows down. if you had an analog and a digital clock would the displayed time be effected? and would they be effected in the same way? would one slow down more than the other?

and if you were there, would you percieve the time slowing down, or would it not seem to change?

discuss.

(edit: read comments if you want to watch boys throwing their geek cocks around)

lol, but you're going 99% of the speed of light, and the message can travel at the speed of light! :op so it can totally catch up to you... and the difference will be more or less negligible.

but is this message travelling at the speed of light?

presumably... or at least closer to it than you are. radio waves, for instance, are just long wavelengths of radiation... the same kind of radiation that, at shorter wavelengths, constitutes visible light.

oh yeah.... i forgot about that.

it's been like... years since i last had a science class. :P

if shawn sends it as a radio wave, or cell phone call, it's transmitted at the speed of light, yes.

well, it's presumably not travelling through a vaccuum, so not *quite* the absolute speed of light... but, at the very least, the same speed a photon of light would travel the same path at.

it's space dude.

Vacuum enough for this discussion :)

lol, we never said this was happening in space either! :op personally, i think miss alicia was just flying like crazy down the I-75 while shawn was laying down and admiring his boombox. this way, shawn sees alicia as a midget, alicia sees shawn as a giant, and the message isn't moving through a perfect vaccuum!

yay for after-the-fact stipulations!! :op

I'm still clear on the orientation here

Are her feet pointed down towards the interstate, (what I would consider superman style), or is she just driving a souped up milk carton???

This will makea difference in the perceptions.

she's flying horizontally... superman-style... :op

In this case, Alicia would still see shawn as a midget, since relative to her, he's the one moving fast.

... right. that's right. phew... i think i pulled my science geek muscle.

According to Alicia, that's the groin (reread her original post, the comment at the bottom).

Since I'm going for a PhD in physics, does that mean I work mine out every day?

we *all* work out our "science muscles" every day... sometimes several times! :op

and don't you deny it!
