i'm a graphic designer, and apple is the industry standard. working on a pc would negatively effect my job opportunities.

...and the g5 dual 2.5 blows the xeon dual 3.2 out of the water in photoshop performance, and that's wha ti use my cmoputer for the most, chatting and working with adobe products.

I think "apple is the industry standard" is Mac's version of "Everyone else is using Windows, so you might as well be using it, too."

I went on a field trip to a print shop with Lex, they had 2 macs, 9 PCs. They said you can pretty much do anything on a PC just as good as on a mac, and the only reason they even had macs on site was because some of thier clients were still using older mac software. I specifically asked about the "industry standard" thing, and they said it used to be true, but the past few years, that's really changing.

Now, MY dream computer is faster than that one, can do more than that one, and is about 3,000 dollars less. 4,000, if I build it myself, which I'm going to do. True, it loses a little in the graphics dept, along the lines of only being able to display 100 million colors, rather than 100 billion, or some such, but at that point, I don't think many people will notice the diff.

you're right about everything. apple does rule multimedia, but they certainly bust out the sandpaper condoms when it comes time to tally the price.

a similar PC system built from scractch wouldn't cost HALF that -- though that 23" lcd display IS a good 1500$ in and of itself.

i don't think apple really does rule multimedia. especially in the case of iMacs, there apple specifically DOES NOT rule multimedia.

the only noticeable difference i EVER experienced when working at the photo studio between their G4s and the craptastic PCs (good lord did those things suck) was processing speed, which was largely due to the massive sucking that the PCs did.

pit my computer against their G4s and i don't expect that i'd see much of a difference in speed.

pit it against a G5, well, the G5 might scare mine away...

i work between mac and pc all the time. i have an ibook and 3 pcs networked together at home.

first off, imacs are crap on fire. they're made to appeal to the pc crowd, not the serious professional.

my ibook is a 366 g3 clamshell. it performs up to speed with my 650 athlon, when running photoshop, and the g3s weren't even 64bit. it's fucking incredible how even the shitty old macs out perform the shitty old pcs.

the g5s are the most powerful prebuilt system on the market today, and i'm sure that it will remain that way for a few years.

i mean yeah, i could go out and scrounge up the parts that are comparable for a pc, but the fact remains that the g5 would still spank it's ass because they run so much faster than a comparable pc.

that being said, i'm planning on upgrading my pc as well, which is going to be a fuckload cheaper, because i'm just going to throw new shit into my old case.
