you sure it's a lobster?

i got him at petland. they have red ones (sold as feeders and much much less expensive) and the electric blue ones.

spak has only molted once since i got him, but i think it's getting time for him to do it again. i'm really excited about it!

he's an electric blue crayfish. they're sometimes sold under the name of freshwater lobsters. a lot of petstores sell them, i happened to get him at petland.

they're pretty easy to take care of, i keep spak in a communal tank with some short finned, fast top swimming fish, as he would eat slower fish that he could grab ahold of. he eats a pea or a piece of sinking goldfish food once every 2-3 days.

:) i'll pass it along that you think he's pretty.

Mine likes to take snips at my Oscars.

He was supposed to be a Blue Crayfish, but he has red flashes on his front claws which makes him something else (I can't remember and kevins asleep or I'd ask him to remind me).

He's adorable thou :)

Some of the "electric" blue crawfish actually have a lot of purple tints to them. Red and purple... not all that uncommon, and utterly cute.

they will change color according to water conditions and the amount of carotines they're receiving. spak's tummy has turned purpley-pink, he was all blue when i got him.

Blue? He's cool! He's punk! LOL I always thought they were a brownish-greenish color. Of course ther are red ones too, but we won't get into that since it's your pet we're talking about.

crayfish have as many color mutations as lobsters. i've seen bright green, orange, black, red, blue, and the muddy color you're talking about.

I've only ever seen one that a friend of mine found in a creek when we were kids. I don't remember now whether it was brownish or greenish. We were only about 10 or 12 at the time.

it's probably what you're feeding them, or the water conditions. even some species that aren't considered "blue" can change colors and become blue.

Oh, and tell Spak he needs to update his LiveJournal. He was on such a roll for a while there.
