My life in top 40s

There’s a meme that’s going around where you post which song was #1 on the week of your birthday, which can be found by going here. I’m generally not one for memes, but I found this entertaining/enlightening. I honestly have no idea what about half these songs are. I’ll follow sylveraven‘s example and link to the videos.

1984: Van Halen – Jump

I’ve actually never heard more than 15-20 seconds of this song. Which is enough that i read the name and knew what song it was, as it’s pretty distinctive. However, I have no desire to actually listen to it all the way through.

1985: REO Speedwagon – Can’t Fight This Feeling

I’ve never heard this at all. And it lost me at the weird baby intro, so I will not be listening to it now.

1986: Starship – Sara

This is the first one that I remember. I didn’t recognize it from the name, but was flooded with memories of being in the car with my mom about 10 seconds in. I am a bit bitter that I haven’t gotten any of the GOOD 80s music yet.

1987: Huey Lewis and The News – Jacob’s Ladder

Never heard it. I think I’m better off?

1988: Rick Astley – Never Gonna Give You Up

I can’t tell you how happy this makes me. It almost makes up for missing out on walk like an egyptian and karma chameleon.

1989: Debbie Gibson – Lost in Your Eyes

Again, never heard it. However, the #1 before this one was “straight up” by paula abdul, and I’m really bitter that didn’t hang on for a bit longer because I have so much history with that song. I distinctly remember it playing in my grandpa’s workshop when I was in there “helping” with his power tools. The world is now a much less rich place because of this song.

1990: Janet Jackson – Escapade

So many times I heard this on my way into school, right past the chicken houses that smelled so awful we’d gag. Yay going to school in south georgia! Also, this was obviously before my time in regards to Mtv. WTF is up with this video? I understand the unfortunate spandex — it was the early 90s… but the thriller knock-off, the monkey mask… wtf???

1991: Mariah Carey – Someday

What on earth happened to Mariah Carey? She was super cute back in the day, even with the unfortunate hair. I remember going “riding” with my mom and one of her friends with this song in the background. “Riding” the “strip” in the town I grew up in was basically circling the Dairy Queen over and over.

1992: Mr. Big – To Be With You

I loathe this song. To make it worse, you can’t actually embed the proper music video “by request”. I feel so cheated! Black or white, i’m too sexy, jump (kris kross), and baby got back all topped that year. Why does March get all the lame songs? Is there some industry formula that I’m not privy to?

1993: Snow – Informer

This was #1 for 7 weeks and i’ve never heard it.

1994: Ace of Base – The Sign

I secretly love this album. I think I owned it on cassette. I think that I’ll soon has it on mp3, because I still kinda love it. Shut up.

1995: Madonna – Take a Bow

I somehow remember the music video for this, although I’m pretty sure I was solely watching Mtv for Beavis and Butthead at that point in my life. P.S. Mega super bitter that I missed getting Creep by TLC. Crazy Sexy Cool was the first cd I ever owned.

1996: Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men – One Sweet Day

This is every single middle school dance that I spent sitting on the bleachers watching all my friends dance.

1997: Spice Girls – Wannabe

I’m pretty sure this song is why I so quickly and so completely rebelled against all popular music. Knowing that I hated the spice girls so much, my aunt made me a homemade spice girls game for xmas 1997. I have not forgotten, my revenge is coming… Also, I almost got Can’t Nobody Hold Me Down… and after that, Hypnotize. Like a knife in my gut, this song is.

1998: Will Smith – Gettin’ Jiggy Wit It

There are two songs that remind me of my friend Dolsen, (who is the tattoo artist who now does all my work. He’s amazing!) this one, and Santeria. Santeria has become our “reminisce about cabbott” song. Thank god I, narrowly, avoided getting My Heart Will Go On.

1999: Cher – Believe

I also kind of love this song too. I don’t care.

2000: Lonestar – Amazed

Never heard this, believe my life is better having not. Wow, looking back on it 2000 seemed to be a pretty low point in popular music.

2001: Joe feat. Mystikal – Stutter

I kinda like this song… but it is sandwiched between butterfly by crazytown which is a guilty pleasure of mine and Ms Jackson by Outkast. Outkast is probably in my top 10 bands, definitely top 15. Bitter!

2002: Jennifer Lopez feat. Ja Rule – Ain’t It Funny

I vaguely remember this song playing in the background while I was shopping. 2002 seems like it was a pretty sad year as well.

2003: 50 Cent – In Da Club

I love to hate this song. However, I’m loving the fact that the video has narrative and features the old school swivel imac.

2004: Usher feat. Lil Jon and Ludacris – Yeah!

Yayehhh! OK! The only reason this song doesn’t make me want to start killing people is Dave Chapelle’s spot-on Lil John impression. I can’t believe I missed Hey Ya! and The Way You Move. Outkast, please start releasing shit in March, kthnx.

2005: 50 Cent feat. Olivia – Candy Shop

Never heard this.

2006: James Blunt – You’re Beautiful

I’ve only ever heard the chorus of this one. I’m okay with that.

2007: Mims – This Is Why I’m Hot

Never heard.

2008: Usher feat. Young Jeezy – Love in This Club

Never heard this either. I’ve just come to the conclusion that I really don’t like Usher.

2009: Flo Rida – Right Round

You Spin Me Right Round is a song very dear to my heart. This song makes me deeply sad. Also, I’d never heard it.

2010: Black Eyed Peas – Imma Be

Oh Fergie, you incontinent meth-head… Never heard this either!

2011: Lady Gaga – Born This Way

Never heard this, and it lost me at the unicorn. So i’m guessing I never will!
